April 16th Fishing Report: Smallmouth Are Here!

With last nights rain, the rivers are effectively blown out. Depending on the rain to come, we may or may not be fishing this weekend. Keep an eye on the gauges to determine the conditions for this weekend. The temperatures are supposed to drop pretty significantly Saturday night through Monday, this may negatively affect fishing in the short term. Overall, this will be beneficial for us as some of our rivers have already seen water temps close to 70.

 

The steelhead season has been sub-par compared to our normal expectations and the season is starting to wrap up. Prior to the rain there were still enough steelhead around to have some fun, but it has taken some work to find them. I suspect we will still have a few fish around after the rivers come back down, but it's hard to say on that. 


While the steelhead fishing has not been great, the smallmouth fishing has really heated up. The lower rivers have had quite a few migratory smallmouth coming in, and double digit smallmouth days were not uncommon this week. A majority of the fish have been in the 14-16 inch class but a few of those lake run giants have been caught too! Prior to this rain, the fish were very concentrated in the lower rivers. Once the rivers drop, the smallmouth should be spread through the entire river systems. They have really been keyed in on lighter colored baitfish patterns, though people have been catching on a variety of
